POLIBIZ – Vice President Kamala Harris has announced an aid of $750 each for victims of Helene hurricane who apply for help. The aid amount by its nature is too small for the victims who lost everything, from house to business facilities, especially in compare with the Administration’s extravagant spending of $941 million for shelter and services for illegal immigrants in FY 2023-2024.

Shelter and Services Program – Competitive (SSP-C) will provide money to non-federal entities for services associated with noncitizen migrant arrivals in their communities. There’s another spending called “Emergency Food & Shelter Program (EFSP) – Humanitarian” to provide food, shelter, transportation for families and individuals encountered by DHS at the southern border.
Meanwhile, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) can meet immediate needs but does not have enough funding to make it through the hurricane season, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas told reporters on 2nd Oct.
The storm struck Florida last week, then plowed through several states in the Southeast, flooding towns, wiping many communities off the map, and killing more than 160 people. If Starlink was available to maintain communication and the rescue forces were present earlier, more lives should have been saved.
To solve FEMA’s budget, Congress may need to pass a supplemental spending bill this fall to help states with recovery efforts. It’s high likely Representatives and Senators would be summoned before the election day to tackle the situation.
Now, the matters of budget planning and spending priorities would resume its role as a topic of political debate.
