FLORIDA - USA In a statement dated 12th Nov 2024, American President-elect Donald Trump announced his planned appointment of billionaire Elon Musk, working in conjunction with young political activist Vivek Ramaswamy, to lead the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). The newly-established Department is tasked to “dismantle government bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure federal agencies”.

DOGE “will provide advice and guidance from outside of Government, and will partner with the White House and Office of Management & Budget to drive large scale structural reform”, the statement read. From that description, DOGE looks like a steering committee, which despite being outside of the current federal system has the authority to provide guidance to other federal agencies.
The title of Elon Musk on DOGE has not been identified yet, despite the normal practice of referring to head of federal Departments as Secretaries. Considering the nature of DOGE’s missions, Elon Musk may be referred as a Chairman, a Chief or simply a Head.
DOGE seems to be not a permanent organization in the federal system since “their work will conclude no later than July 4, 2026”. It’s likely that when the structural reform is completed and the goal of “a smaller government, with more efficiency and less bureaucracy” is reached, DOGE would be dissolved or downsized into an oversight arm of the White House.
Before the presidential election, Elon Musk talked to Tucker Carlson that "There are around 428 federal agencies. There's so many that people have never even heard of. I think we should be able to get away with 99 agencies." Donald Trump said in an event with Carlson that “Elon is a great cost cutter. He thinks he can cut costs [of the government] by $2 trillion per annum”.
